You Taught Her How To Be Alone, So Don’t Be Surprised When She No Longer Needs You
Don’t be surprised when you’re not the first person she calls when something bad or good happens. You taught her that you won’t show up when she needs you. You taught her how to count on someone else.
Don’t be surprised when she spends more time with her friends than you. You taught her that you’re never going to be present. You don’t listen when she speaks. You don’t remember the things she told you. You don’t ask about how she’s feeling or what’s bothering her. You taught her that you’ll never care about her as much as her friends do.
Don’t be surprised when she starts planning things without you. You taught her that you’ll always say no. You taught her how to plan her future without you. You taught her that you don’t want to be in it, that you’d rather be alone than with her. You never wanted to see the world through her eyes.
Don’t be surprised when she doesn’t miss you when you’re gone. You taught her how not to miss you. You made her feel like you never missed her. She never felt like her absence made a difference to you. She never felt that she added any value to your life. You never showed her that you missed her. You never told her.
Don’t be surprised when she ignores you. You’ve been ignoring her for years. She’s always been the one compromising. She’s always been the one to change her schedule for you. She’s always been the one who tried harder. She was always more invested until she realized that it was a bad investment. An investment that she keeps losing.
Don’t be surprised when she starts to drift away. She’s slowly remembering who she was before she met you. She’s beginning to realize that she’s settling with you. She’s starting to remember what she deserves. She’s slowly opening her eyes and seeing how much you’re taking her for granted. She’s slowly coming to the realization that someone else could treat her so much better. Someone else will not make her feel invisible.
Don’t be surprised when she stops being attentive or caring. Don’t be surprised when her tender words turn sour and her burning passion turns cold. Don’t be surprised when she looks at you and doesn’t feel a thing. You taught her how to stop loving you.
Don’t be surprised when she leaves because you never gave her a reason to stay.
